The Religious Freedom Monument was originally installed on George Street, but it was later moved to its present location on Washington Avenue. This area is a historical district within the city. It is located on the original grounds of Kenmore Plantation, just steps from the mansion on a small, beautiful, secluded parkway that also holds the Mary Washington and General Hugh Mercer Monuments. The Washington Avenue Historic District is Fredericksburg’s only historic monumental avenue and the site of high-style residences built for the city’s elite at the turn of the twentieth century. The new location was more fitting for the monument, as it was now among other noteworthy tributes. You can read more about the monument here.
