In 1974, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Dr. Kurt F. Leidecker established the Thomas Jefferson Institute for the Study of Religious Freedom, which was active until his death in 1991. In 2001, our Alliance was formed to continue Dr. Leidecker’s legacy, and to call attention to the 225th anniversary of Jefferson’s Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom. In 2026, the Alliance was reactivated for the 250thanniversary of the bill, and again to call attention to Fredericksburg as the place where Jefferson first outlined it in January 1777.
